may 21 marks international tea day, as designated by the united nations general assembly in 2019 in a bid to "promote and foster collective actions to implement activities in favor of the sustainable production and consumption of tea and raise awareness of its importance in fighting hunger and poverty."
according to the united nations, tea is the 2nd most consumed drink in the world after water and has seen its production and processing contribute to the reduction of extreme poverty, the fight against hunger, the empowerment of women and the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. meanwhile, raising public awareness of the importance of tea for rural development and sustainable livelihoods and improving the tea value chain is in line with the implementation of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.

boasting a rich and profound tea culture, china is one of the dominant global "tea players," and ranks as the largest tea producer and a leading exporter in the world. therefore, it is not surprising why various activities have been held across the country to honor the day for chinese people's beloved beverage.
here in china, tea art involves not only skills and techniques, but also the spirit of sharing. on may 20, a tea art contest was held in shangrao, jiangxi province, where tea lovers were offered a chance to showcase their skills and enjoy a locally produced black tea together.
the charm of those magical leaves appears to have conquered hearts of all ages nationwide. on may 18, while a group of young people were taking delight in holding a cup and admiring fan paintings in fuyang, anhui province, some elder residents from a community in hangzhou, zhejiang province, were also having fun getting together and learning knowledge about green tea.
tea is counted as a cornerstone of daily life in china, and a living heritage. it is offered almost everywhere, including in homes and tea houses, in offices and restaurants, and even in schools.
tea also serves as a bond of understanding and friendship, linking people from different countries and backgrounds together.
