only two former water gates of china's grand canal have been designated as heritage sites: panmen gate in suzhou and the fengshan water gate in hangzhou.
the fengshan water gate not only marks the northern endpoint of the longshan river but also guards the vital passage from the jiangnan canal to qiantang river.
the fengshan water gate stands as a crucial landmark in studying the evolution of hangzhou's fortifications and culture. in the decade following the grand canal's unesco recognition, it has drawn countless visitors and researchers eager to explore the ancient capital of the southern song dynasty (1127-1279), witness the reconstruction of deshou palace, and experience the transformation of surrounding streets and alleys.
it is here, at this ancient water gate, that visitors can experience a renewed vibrancy and enduring charm.
