the 6th china grand canal temple fair opened at the grand canal scenic area in hangzhou, capital of zhejiang province, on oct 17.
with a history of over 2000 years, the grand canal stretching from hangzhou to beijing is about 1,764 kilometers long. as a unesco world heritage site, the river was the longest man-made waterway in ancient china.
the temple fair, which is meant to celebrate the traditional culture of the grand canal, will last from oct 17 to oct 23.
the seven-day event will feature traditional chinese cultural performances and several grand canal-themed exhibitions, as well as agricultural products, handicrafts created using traditional techniques, and local specialties from across zhejiang province.
visitors will also be offered opportunities to take a boat trip on the ancient waterway to enjoy some of its unrivaled scenery.
on oct 19 and 20, a grand ceremony to release lanterns over the river will be held to bring good luck, in accordance with chinese tradition.
