the first batch of chilean cherries for the 2024 season arrived at hangzhou international airport on the morning of nov 19 aboard jd606, weighing 3.6 metric tons.
after swift quarantine and inspection by airport customs, the cherries were transported to nearby markets to be sold, marking the official start of this year's chilean cherry import season at hangzhou's airport.
known for their vibrant red color, juicy sweetness, and richness in antioxidants, chilean cherries have grown increasingly popular in china. during the 2023-24 season, china consumed 377,000 tons of chilean cherries, accounting for 91 percent of chile's total cherry exports.
the cherries, harvested between november and february, fill a seasonal gap in domestic fruit supplies during winter. "demand for chilean cherries is strong, and with hangzhou airport's efficient international routes and customs clearance, we plan to bring in more shipments," said chen min, customs director at a local international freight forwarding company.
to ensure the cherries' freshness and speedy clearance after a 30-hour journey from santiago, airport customs implemented measures such as pre-arrival declarations, 24/7 priority inspections, and close coordination with logistics partners. these efforts guarantee that the cherries are still fresh when they reach consumers.
the arrival of this first batch sets the stage for a fruitful season of fresh imports.
