oil-paper umbrellas are a traditional han chinese handicraft. due to hangzhou’s plentiful rainfall and abundant bamboo forests, such umbrellas were necessary rain gear in ancient times. the first oil-paper umbrella shop was established in the city in 1769 during the qing dynasty. hangzhou is now home to the largest modern umbrella manufacturers in china, following a successful transition from traditional to modern umbrella manufacturing processes.
