the beijing-hangzhou grand canal, the longest and biggest canal in the world, was first constructed in the late spring and autumn period (770-476 bc). the scope of the waterway today is the result of massive expansion during the dynasties of sui (581-618) and yuan (534-550).

the canal starts in the south in hangzhou in east china's zhejiang province and reaches to beijing in the north, running through the provinces of jiangsu, shandong and hebei, as well as tianjing city. spanning over 1,797 kilometers, it connects the waters of the haihe river, yellow river, huaihe river, yangtze river and qiantang river.

through its history of more than 2,500 years, the canal has played a key role in cultural and economic communications between the north and south, especially promoting industrial and agricultural economy in coastal areas.

a legacy created by ancient chinese people, the canal has become a cultural symbol of china. it entered the world heritage list in 2014 as the country's 46th world heritage item.
