hangzhou hospital elevates talent, tech through institute partnerships

hospitals in hangzhou, zhejiang province have been enhancing their talent cultivation and technological advancement through cooperation with institutes.
during a tour organized by the health commission of zhejiang province on oct 5, a media group visited zhejiang cancer hospital in hangzhou to observe its innovative approaches.
founded in 1963, zhejiang cancer hospital originally focused on clinical oncology services. a significant turning point came in 2019, when a medical cooperation agreement was signed between the zhejiang provincial government and the chinese academy of sciences.
this agreement paved the way for the establishment of the hangzhou institute of medicine of the chinese academy of sciences and marked a shift for zhejiang cancer hospital towards becoming a research-oriented cancer center.
the collaborative efforts between the hospital and the institute have yielded remarkable results. with policy support, they encourage close collaboration between doctors and scientists in significant research endeavors.
the hospital also offers substantial research funding and comprehensive supporting policies to young talent from their initial employment until their retirement, highlighted cheng xiangdong, the hospital's party secretary.
from 2019 to 2024, the hospital, along with the institute, has landed 205 projects funded by the national natural science foundation of china, with 59 secured in 2024 alone, achieving a double breakthrough in both the number of approved projects and funding amount.
early this year, the hangzhou institute of medicine was officially established in hangzhou, further solidifying the integration of research efforts with the zhejiang cancer hospital.
tan weihong, director of hangzhou institute of medicine and president of zhejiang cancer hospital, emphasized the institute's dual focus on basic research and clinical applications. it currently has more than 240 post-doctoral researchers, 84 backbone researchers, and over 700 graduate students, which has also played an important role in strengthening the hospital's research capabilities.
